Dayhike Humphrey's Peak--Arizona Highpoint

In July of 2004, Neil F. and I drove up to Flagstaff to hike to the top of Humphrey's Peak in the San Francisco Mountains. Humphrey's Peak is the Arizona state highpoint at 12,637' in elevation. Neil had never done this hike before and we also wanted to see how we would do at altitude before our hike to Mount Whitney in California in August.

We started early from the parking lot at the Snow Bowl for the 4.5 mile hike to the top. Since we had been walking prior we made pretty steady progress toward the top. The sky started off pretty clear but became more cloudy as the day progressed. As we made our descent from the top we ran into more and more folks, many of whom were walking with their dogs that were not on leashes. We didn't have any unpleasant encounters, but weren't certain how we felt about dogs on the trail and the no leash policy. There were no ill effects felt from the weather or the altitude.
